REPORT: AFC Burnley 6 Hesketh Casuals 1
AFC Burnley returned to competitive action with a 6-1 win over Hesketh Casuals in the Lancashire Amateur League Cup.
Jonny Carlin bagged a brace with Josh Cook, Mark Taylor, Aaran Smith and Sohaib Ahmed also getting on the scoresheet.
Burnley survived an early scare when a Hesketh forward got in behind the defence and fired wide of the post.
Cook was then denied by the goalkeeper before a Hesketh defender made a vital block on the goal line.
The hosts took the lead through Carlin’s emphatic finish after Cook had won back possession high up the pitch.
The forward was on target again moments later, finding the bottom corner with a composed strike.
And Cook added a third on the verge of half-time, heading home from Paul Hanson’s inviting cross.
The visitors pulled one back from the penalty spot early in the second half, before Mark Taylor restored Burnley’s three-goal cushion from close range.
And the hosts added a fifth when Smith’s effort took a nick off a defender and wrong-footed the goalkeeper.
Inside the final five minutes, Ahmed wrapped up the win with a stunning free-kick from a tight angle.
